Europac to invest Euro 35 million at its Dueñas paper mill in Spain

The Euro 35 million to be invested by Europac Group (Papeles y cartones de Europa, S.A.) in paper and packaging factory in Dueñas will mainly be directed towards the development of new paper products for high-added value packaging, the optimisation and improvement of the current paper range, the update of facilities and the development of latest technologies, as well as an increase in overall efficiency and production capacity.

José Miguel Isidro, the company director, said: "The planned investments reinforce our commitment to Castile and Leon and they guarantee the sustainability of a project that will make the Dueñas factory into a market leader in the development of coated paper and high-added value packaging solutions". These projects, as stated by the company director, "form part of the measures intended to increase profitability, in accordance with the strategic objectives for 2015-2018".

In the Paper Division, the most important project is the third and final phase of the Proyecto Estucados (Coating Project). Following the launch of simple coated paper in 2013 and the standardisation of the two paper machine widths in 2015, the project will conclude with the production of double layer coated paper. The Dueñas factory will be the only manufacturer in southern Europe and the third in the entire continent to produce this quality of paper, intended for the production of corrugated board packaging which demands the highest print quality.

In line with the increasing market demand of this kind of packaging, the Packaging Division will continue to work on the development of digital printing, a technology which the Dueñas factory is pioneering since it began collaborating with Hewlett Packard over a year ago. In fact, the Europac Group, through its factory in Palencia, is one of five companies in the world that, together with the global leader in printing, form part of the development project for digital printing on corrugated board.

In addition, it will make a number of investments into improving the overall efficiency of the facility and the quality of printing. This includes the optimisation of the corrugated line and the development of a smart warehouse for intermediary product, as well as the installation of a new high-quality hexachrome printer.

Lastly, the planned investments will increase production capacity of the packaging factory by 32%, making the Palencia facility into one of the market leaders in high-quality printing.
