Suppliers in three countries, China, Malaysia and Indonesia account for almost all Japan’s plywood imports. Plywood imports have steadily fallen since the beginning of 2015 but September marked a turning point as import volumes from Malaysia and Indonesia jumped. Year-on-year September imports were down 11% but the fall was not evenly spread across the three main suppliers.

Japan’s plywood imports down 11% in September

Plywood imports have steadily fallen since the beginning of 2015 but September marked a turning point as import volumes from Malaysia and Indonesia jumped, ITTO reported.

However, overall imports of plywood remain very subdued. Year-on-year September imports were down 11% but the fall was not evenly spread across the three main suppliers.

Year-on-year imports from China crashed 45% while imports from Malaysia dropped almost 20% and imports from Indonesia fell 13.5%. Average monthly plywood imports in the first three quarters of 2015 were down 42% on the avaerage for the same period in 2014.
