Prices of wood based biofuels in Sweden up 8,5 % in 2008

Mar 13, 2009. /Lesprom Network/. Preliminary figures published by the Swedish Energy Agency for 2008 indicate that prices of wood based biofuels are still increasing. In 2008 industry and heating plants paid on the average 8,5 % more for woodchips than in 2007, as Nordic Forest Owners Association informed Lesprom Network. Average prices per Mwh were SEK 156,5 (circa Euro 13,9), taxes excluded. Prices of by-products from the wood processing and sawmill industry increased by an average of 10 % to SEK 159 (circa Euro 14,1) per Mwh. Prices of processed wood based fuel are considerably higher. Last year Swedish heating plants paid an average price of SEK 271 (circa Euro 24 ) per Mwh for pellets and briquettes. This is an increase of 10 % from 2007. Simultaneously decreasing prices of pulpwood mean that prices of pulpwood and of energy wood are getting closer and closer. In most areas in Sweden prices of pulpwood are still a bit higher, but for example in the Stockholm region they are almost the same. These figures represent prices that customers have actually paid. Therefore they may differ from current market prices which may be influenced for example by long term delivery contracts.
