SFPA: Southern pine lumber exports increased by 17% in 2014

Feb 27, 2015. /Lesprom Network/. Southern Pine exports finished 2014 at a record volume of just over 552 million board feet (MMbf), a jump of 17% above the 2013 export total. Southern Pine lumber exports have more than doubled in the past five years, as the Southern Forest Products Association (SFPA) said in the press release received by Lesprom Network.

During 2014, the top three destinations for Southern Pine exports were China (107.5 MMbf), up 67%; the Dominican Republic (77.8 MMbf), up 4%; and Mexico (56.8 MMbf), down 4%.

For the month of December, exports totaled 39.2 MMbf, a drop of 18% from December 2013. December shipments offshore break down as follows: 21.5 MMbf dressed, 5.1 MMbf rough and 12.6 MMbf treated lumber.

Softwood lumber imports to the U.S. finished 2014 with a volume of 12.4 billion board feet (Bbf), up 11% from 2013.

December imports amounted to just over 1 billion board feet, up a hefty 18% above December 2013 imports. During all of 2014, softwood imports from Canada totaled approximately 12 Bbf, with 997 MMbf imported in December alone.

SFPA’s members produce about 45% of the Southern Pine lumber in the United States.
