Jun 28, 2014. /Lesprom Network/. At Rome, Italy, The 22nd session of the Committee on Forestry (COFO 22) of the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) is talking about the forest-based bioeconomy and the socioeconomic benefits of forests, as the Finnish Forest Industries Federation said in the press release received by Lesprom Network.

The International Council of Forest and Paper Associations (ICFPA) is one participant of the session and has promoted the industry's multiple benefits and contributions to the bioeconomy. These include resource efficiency, recycling, bio-based products, innovative technologies, carbon sequestration, and improving the well-being of communities.

“The global forest products industry has the potential to answer the increasing demand for sustainable products,” says ICFPA President Donna Harman.

Harman points out that through sustainable forest management forest industry provides products people need – like food, energy and shelter – while also develops innovative solutions to challenges posed by the growing world population.

The Assistant Director General of FAO Eduardo Rojas sees the collaboration with the private sector forestry and forest industry groups very valuable and beneficial.

“Their ideas on eliminating food insecurity and making forestry more productive and sustainable are of great value for us,” says Rojas.

Together, ICFPA members represent nearly 90% of global paper production and 60% of global wood production. The session continues until 27th of June.
