Forest Research appointed Tom Jenkins as Head of the Agency in Wales

Mar 29, 2014. /Lesprom Network/. Forest Research, the research agency of the Forestry Commission, appointed Tom Jenkins as Head of the Agency in Wales. Tom will take up his appointment from 21 April 2014 and replaces Professor Hugh Evans, who is retiring from the post, as the Forestry Commission said in the press release received by Lesprom Network.

Tom Jenkins joined Forest Research in February 2009 from Bangor University. A Fellow of the Institute of Chartered Foresters, Tom is currently Deputy Programme Group Manager in the Forest Mensuration, Modelling and Forecasting group which has responsibilities for the research and development of forest measurement systems, the maintenance of measurement standards and the development and implementation of models of forest growth and yield, biomass and carbon. Tom and his immediate research colleagues work closely with the Forestry Commission’s Inventory, Forecasting and Operational Support (IFOS) team in support of the GB National Forest Inventory (NFI) and GB Production Forecast. Tom also works in support of the Forestry Commission’s Woodland Carbon Code as the lead author of the Carbon Assessment Protocol.

Commenting upon his appointment, Tom said: “I am delighted to be able to take forward the work Forest Research carries out to support the ongoing work of Natural Resources Wales and of the Land, Nature, Forestry and Marine Division of the Welsh Government in addressing Welsh research priorities and the forestry agenda. I also look forward to strengthening existing links, and exploring new collaborative opportunities with Universities and Research Institutes across Wales.

The continued presence and development of the Forestry Commission’s Forest Research unit in Aberystwyth has the potential to bring considerable cross-border benefits to forestry research activities throughout Wales.”

Forest Research is an executive agency of the Forestry Commission. It conducts world-class scientific research and technical development relevant to forestry to support and inform the policies for sustainable forest management of all four administrations in the UK.
