Prices for Chinese plywood decline in international markets

China’s plywood exports totalled 5.52 million cubic metres, valued at $2,610 million in the first half of 2016, much the same volume as in the first half of 2015 but the average unit price for exported plywood in the first half of 2016 was $473 per cubic metre, a year-on-year decline of 6%, ITTO reported.

In the first half of this year the main markets for China’s plywood were the USA (930,000 cubic metres, down 1%), the Philippines (410,000 cubic metres, up 40%), UAE (380,000 cubic metres, up 6%), the UK (370,000 cubic metres, down 12%), Japan (300,000 cubic metres, down 12%), South Korea (290,000 cubic metres, down 10%), Saudi Arabia (240,000 cubic metres, down 17%), Thailand (160,000 cubic metres, up 19%), and Algeria (130,000 cubic metres, up 104%).

Looking at price trends in the various markets a different story emerges with the average price for plywood exports being $705 per cubic metre in the US, $406 per cubic metre in the Philippines, $376 per cubic metre in UAE, $443 per cubic metre in the UK, $448 per cubic metre in Japan, $361 per cubic metre in South Korea, and $304 per cubic metre in Saudi Arabia, $340 per cubic metre in Thailand, $421 per cubic metre in Israel, and $330 per cubic metre in Algeria.

Overall prices in these markets fell between 2% and 9%.
