Building projects with a total floor space of 2272 million m² were started in China during 2019 (+8.5% compared to 2018), of which 1675 million m² were residential (+9.2%), reported Woodstat. "This new record level will of course support a high consumption and import of softwood lumber", says Jenny Wessung, CEO at Woodstat AB who is specialized in the softwood lumber market.

A total floor space of 1716 million m² were sold in China during 2019 (-0.1% compared to 2018), of which 1501 million m² were residential (+1.5%). The started floor space of residential buildings was larger than the sold floor space during 2019. The difference was 174 million m².

The trend line for total building projects started in China in terms of floor space is at a record high level.
