KHABAROVSK. Oct 15 (Interfax) - Firefighters have not succeeded in preventing the spread of forest fires in Khabarovsk territory.
Forty-five fires have been registered on an area of 39,100 hectares, an official in the Far Eastern Natural Resources Department told Interfax on Monday. Local residents negligently started 17 fires in an area of 397 hectares on Sunday, the official said. Three fires in an area of 53 hectares have been extinguished and one brought under control on a seven-hectare plot.
A total of 599 people and 86 pieces of machinery, including nine aircraft, are working to extinguish the fires. A total of 50 fires, 19 of them large, are raging in an area of 44,300 hectares in Russia's Far East.
