German mills quiz politicians on policy

Jul 17, 2009. /Lesprom Network/. German sawmillers have quizzed political parties on their policies towards the timber industry in advance of the federal elections in September, Timber Trades Journal reported. The German Association of the Sawmilling and Timber Industry (BSHD) gave questionnaires with five key questions to all the main political parties. BSHD chief executive Frank Ahnefeld said the intention of the exercise was to give companies a clear overview and comparison of the various parties’ policies to boost the timber trade. Mr Ahnefeld stressed that no recommendations were being made to support particular parties. The German sawmilling sector is facing tough times, with mill curtailments and closures taking place due to factors including high log costs and low demand in key markets.
