Ghana’s wood product exports down 11% in January-May 2019

In the first 5-months of this year Ghana’s wood product exports totalled 128,842 cubic metres, down around 11% from the same period in 2018, as ITTO reported.

The main export markets in the period reviewed remained Asia (93,170 cubic metres), Europe (16,671 cubic metres), Africa (13,382 cubic metres), America (3,827 cubic metres) and Middle East (1,807 cubic metres).

The Ghana Timber Industry Development Division (TIDD) of the Forestry Commission reported exports of 16 product categories which earned the country Euro 66.05 million as against the Euro 86.32 million in the same period in 2018.

Air-dried sawnwood (62%), kiln-dried sawnwood (12%), billets (10%) and plywood shipped overland to neighbouring countries (6.4%) were the leading export products accounting for over 90% of the total export volume. The balance was made up of some 9 other products. 

The production of the mian export products were manufactured from mainly teak, wawa, ceiba, papao/apa and denya.
