Feb 08, 2005. /Lesprom Network/. The Finnish company "Metsaliitto Group" has given up its plan to build the cellulose plant in Latvia until the attitude toward the project changes in Latvia, Eero Kytola, "Metsaliitto" vice president, told reporters after a meeting with Prime Minister Aigars Kalvitis today, LETA news agency reported. Kytola pointed out that demands set for technology used in the cellulose plant are inadmissible for "Metsaliitto Group" as they have not been utilized in other company plants. He stressed that the plant would not be built in Latvia until the government, parliament and the people agree on its construction. "Metsaliitto Group" could change their opinion if support for the project is received, and if the conclusion on the impact of the plant on the environment is based on precise facts. The company's representative pointed out that no dialog had been conducted between the company and the state during the past two Latvian governments. Kytola pointed out that "Metsaliitto Group" has many cellulose plants in Finland, and in the near future it would open a plant in Uruguay. The premier told reporters that with the decision by "Metsaliitto Group", Latvia has lost a significant and needed project in the forestry branch. "Metsaliitto Group" was ready to invest about EUR 900 million (LVL 632.5 million) to prepare for implementation of the project. The joint stock "Baltic Pulp" was set up in 2000. The state holds 33% of shares but remaining 67% are the property of the Finnish company. Construction of the cellulose plant in Ozolsala, Jekabpils District, was to begin in 2007.
