Segezha Forest Industry Group (part of Sistema JSFC) put into operation the fourth bark-and-wood byproduct-fueled energy boiler in Onega, Russia. The investments into the project of Onega-Energy JSC exceeded RUB 200 million ($2.5 million).

The installation of the new biofueled boiler with the output capacity of 14 MW by Onega-Energy has practically completed the process of replacing obsolete and inefficient sources of heat supply working on coal with cutting-edge wood-fueled boilers. The project had been initially started back in 2006. The fourth energy boiler has added capacities to other energy sources of the company which use biomass (mostly moist bark from Onega LDK) as fuel.

“Deep processing of wood is self-sufficient energy-wise by default, because modern technologies presuppose effective utilization of generated waste, first and foremost, bark and wood waste,” said Vladimir Kukhtin, Executive Director of Onega-Energy JSC. “Construction and assembly work was completed in December 2019, and in February representatives of KPA Unicon Oy (Finland) completed the launch operations as required by the contract. Boiler No. 4 has been launched and has already reached target capacity indicators.”

After the launching of boiler No. 4 at Onega-Energy, the energy asset of Segezha Group in the region has been generating up to 57 MW of energy, providing heat to 80% of consumers in Onega. The new source allowed to eliminate the deficit of heat production capacities in the single-profile city, which in turn will help improve the quality of heat supply to consumers. Onega-Energy has been heating the city with use of exclusively renewable sources of energy: the diesel fuel boiler with the capacity of 9 MW has been placed on hold; it will be used in case of an emergency.
