May 01, 2008. /Lesprom.com/. Simpson Tacoma Kraft Co. LLC, one of Washington’s oldest continuously operating forest products companies, intends to bring on line a project that would produce renewable biomass energy at its pulp and paper mill in Tacoma, Washington, Biomass magazine informed. Simpson would sell the project’s power output to PPM Energy, a leading wind energy, power and gas provider headquartered in Portland, Oregan. Simpson is investing approximately $100 million to build the project, of which $20 million will create jobs for construction of the facility. The project will use cogeneration technology to produce electricity and steam — from two forms of biomass: wood residuals and black liquor from the pulping process. The project, which will generate up to 55 megawatts of renewable biomass energy, is scheduled to begin commercial operation in August 2009. Simpson operates four wood product manufacturing plants, one pulp and paper facility and two door manufacturing plants in Washington, as well as two wood product manufacturing plants in South Carolina and one in Georgia.
