Jan 28, 2005. /Lesprom Network/. Smurfit-Stone Container Corporation has promoted four people to key positions in its Containerboard Mill and Forest Resources division, it was announced. Larry Price has been promoted to vice president, mill operations; Paul Hayes to general manager, West Point, VA, mill; Jim Sorenson to general manager, Uncasville, CT, mill; and Chris Broome to general manager, Ontonagon, MI, mill. Price, 45, has been general manager of Smurfit-Stone’s West Point, VA, mill since 2000. He succeeds Sonny Jackson, who earlier this month was named vice president and general manager of Smurfit-Stone’s Containerboard Mill division. Price began his career with the company in 1983 as an electrical/instrument engineer at the West Point mill. He held a variety of positions with increasing responsibility until 1991, when he was promoted to manager, operations information systems. In 1994, Price was promoted to manager, manufacturing services and in 1997 to vice president, operations. Price earned his bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering from West Virginia Institute of Technology in 1981, and his MBA from the College of William and Mary in 1991. Hayes, 61, has been general manager of Smurfit-Stone’s Uncasville, CT, mill since 1996. He succeeds Price at the West Point mill. Hayes began his career with the company in 1974 as a project engineer at the Hodge, LA, mill. While at Hodge, Hayes was regularly promoted in the power and recovery department, and eventually to mill engineer. In 1987, he was promoted to maintenance and engineering manager at the Snowflake, AZ, mill. He was promoted to operations manager at the Seminole mill in Jacksonville, FL, in 1994. Hayes earned his bachelor’s degree in engineering from Colorado State University. Sorenson, 59, has been general manager of Smurfit-Stone’s Ontonagon mill since 2001. He succeeds Hayes at the Uncasville mill. Sorenson began his career with Smurfit-Stone in 1971 at the Los Angeles mill as an engineering trainee, advancing to plant engineer. In 1988, Sorenson became plant engineer at the company’s Monroe, MI, facility; and in 1990, he was named maintenance and engineering manager at the newsprint facility in Pomona, CA. He returned to the Los Angeles mill in 1994 as operations manager. Sorenson earned his bachelor’s degree in engineering from South Dakota State University and his MBA from the University of Southern California. Broome, 47, has been production manager at the company’s Seminole mill in Jacksonville, FL. He succeeds Sorenson at the Ontonagon mill. Broome began his career with the company in 1980 at the Fernandina Beach, FL, mill as a process engineer. Broome moved to Chicago in 1985 as a senior planning analyst and returned to Fernandina Beach the following year as a senior planning analyst. He was promoted to paper machine superintendent in 1989, paper mill manager in 1992, and production manager of the Alton, IL, mill in 1996. He returned to the Seminole mill as production manager following the 1998 merger of Jefferson Smurfit Corporation and Stone Container Corporation. He earned his bachelor’s degree in chemical engineering from Georgia Tech University and his Master’s degree in business management from Central Michigan University. The promotions are effective February 1, 2005.
