Aug 03, 2009. /Lesprom Network/. Skogssällskapet (the Swedish Forestry Association) has noticed a clear change of trends concerning the willingness to pay for energy wood, as reported by the Nordic Forest Owners' Association. The new ways of using wood also change harvesting methods. In a press release Mr Lennart Jansson, production manager at the Skogssällskapet’s Jönköping office, says that for the first time they are now harvesting wood that goes to sawmills and heating plants, but not for pulp production. This new situation is also affecting harvesting methods. A consequence of this change of trends is that tree tops are not cut off. The principle is that branches and tops are simply left on the stem. They are chipped and burned in heating plants. What normally is called pulpwood is now being used for pellet production, says Mr Jansson.. The consequence is that forest owners get a better price because of increased total volume. Heating plants consume everything and the Forestry Association calculates that harvested volumes can increase by 3-4%.
