Apr 06, 2007. /Lesprom Network/. For the time present China doesn’t intend to lease large forest lands in Russia, official representative of State forestry department of China Cao Cinyao told Russian journalists.
“We’ve heard about Russian proposal to lease China 1 million hectares of forest lands in Russia but we don’t have such plans yet”, Cao Cinyao said.
Earlier Russian representatives were quoted to say that China may lease up to 1 million hectares of forest lands in Russia.
At the same time Cinyao noted that China is very interested in development of cooperation with Russia in the field of timber purchase. He added that China and Russia are permanently contacting in the sphere of forestry.
“But recently Russia has changed its legislation and now it doesn’t welcome roundwood export. Wood-processing which Russia would like to execute in the country increases significantly product cost and isn’t very profitable for small and private Chinese companies”, Cao Cinyao said.
He emphasized that “cooperation should be founded on mutually beneficial basis”, RIA Novosti reported.
