European shipments of newsprint increased by 1.8% in September
Oct 25, 2010. European shipments of European publication paper grades increased across the board in September 2010. For newsprint, the level of total shipments edged up 1.8% (17,000 tonnes) last month against September 2009. Exports were the main driver of the rise in shipments as overseas deliveries climbed 11.2% (16,000 tonnes) year-on-year. European demand for the newsprint grade was down slightly by 0.8% (7,000 tonnes).

For newsprint, the level of total shipments edged up 1.8% (17,000 tonnes) last month against September 2009. Exports were the main driver of the rise in shipments as overseas deliveries climbed 11.2% (16,000 tonnes) year-on-year. European demand for the newsprint grade was down slightly by 0.8% (7,000 tonnes).
Total European shipments of SC-Magazine were up 6.0% (25,000 tonnes) in September compared to the year-earlier period. The rise was entirely due to a 55.1% (34,000 tonnes) hike in exports of the grade. European demand for SC Magazine slipped 3.1% (11,000 tonnes) year-on-year.
The coated mechanical reels sector recorded an increase in total European shipments of 12.6% (86,000 tonnes) last month. Exports climbed 40% (46,000 tonnes) against September last year and European demand was up 7.0% (40,000 tonnes) for the same period.
Looking at uncoated mechanical paper, last month saw total European shipments of the grade rise 18.9% (40,000 tonnes) compared to September 2009. Overseas shipments were up 25.5% (8,000 tonnes) year on year, while domestic deliveries recorded a 17.7% (31,000 tonnes) hike.
