Finnish forest industry carriers lose weekly turnover on paper strike

May 19, 2006. /Lesprom Network/. Finnish forest industry transportation companies registered losses equivalent to their weekly turnover on the strike of local paper workers that took place on May 15 and 16, 2006, Taloussanomat is quoting the Association of forest industry road carriers.
For the majority of the companies, the two-day strike at the paper mills resulted in work halts of up to five days in transports, the Association said.
Previous strikes in the local paper industry which took place in the spring of 2005 affected the transportation sector by some Euro 25 million.
The paper workers returned to the mills on May 17, 2006, however followed by one-day protest actions of the white-collar workers, which additionally delayed the deliveries.
The actions aimed to protest against the massive job cuts of Finnish printing paper maker UPM-Kymmene in the country.
