Sep 24, 2009. /Lesprom Network/. Tasmanian timber company Gunns is planning to axe 35 jobs in its forestry sector, ABC News reported.
The company has asked for voluntary redundancies, with 14 jobs to go from its three woodchip mills and 21 jobs to go from plantation and administration departments.
But the Construction, Forestry, Mining and Energy union's state secretary Scott McLean says the jobs will be axed anyway if Gunns does not get enough volunteers.
Mr McLean says there is a major downturn in the forestry industry world wide. "There are a number of issues that the company has spoken to us about and advised us of, and that is of course the strong Australian dollar, a downturn in the wood fibre market, internationally, and I think things are fairly tough at the moment and hopefully we'll weather the storm," he said.
