Dec 08, 2005. /Lesprom Network/. The Indonesian government is currently preparing a draft law to curb illegal logging. The efforts involving several ministries are aimed at eliminating the log-smuggling network. If the inter-departmental team is unable to finalize the bill, it will be taken over by the House on its initiative, forestry minister MS Kaban said after a hearing with the House Commission IV here on Wednesday.
The inter-departmental talks on the illegal logging bill proceeded in tandem with the meeting of eleven members of the commission on September 22 at the forestry ministry. But if it reached a deadlock, it would be taken over by the House on its initiative, he said.
Commission member Dr. Ishartanto said the illegal logging bill will involve several relevant agencies like the forestry ministry or law enforcers. His colleague Azwar Chesputra said the draft law was designed to accelerate the settlement of illegal logging cases. Therefore, the commission will take the initiative in ensuring legal certainty, so that all ministries have the right to work on the draft law. The draft law is expected to be completed in 2006.
