MOSCOW, Mar 1 /Prime-TASS/ -- Russian Prime Minister Mikhail Kasyanov said Friday he was dissatisfied with the makeup of Russian exports to Finland. "The situation, when Russia supplies primarily raw material for processing in Finland, should not last for a long time," Kasyanov said at a Russian-Finnish conference on timber producers and exporters.
"Our /Finnish/ colleagues have been taking advantage of Russia’s poor management for a long time. But the time has come now to ensure the balance of our interests," Kasyanov said. Kasyanov said Russia planned to take steps to develop its own processing facilities.
Kasyanov also said he had agreed with his Finnish counterpart Paavo Lipponen, who also took part in the conference, on setting up a joint working group to study the prospects of bilateral cooperation in the timber industry. Kasyanov said the timber industry accounted only for about 10% of Russian-Finnish annual trade turnover, totaling U.S. $7 billion.
He urged the development of bilateral "investment cooperation" in the timber industry, adding that the total Finnish investment in the Russian timber industry has totaled just $79 million. According to the Russian Economic Development and Trade Ministry, only $66 million of this amount were direct investments.
Kasyanov said the Russian government planned to discuss the development of the domestic timber industry in the very near future. According to the Russian Economic Development and Trade Ministry, Russian timber exports to Finland are expected to amount to 14 million cubic meters this year and annual exports were expected to increase to 20 million cubic meters by 2005. In 2001, Russian exported 11.7 million cubic meters of timber to Finland.
Meanwhile, Finland exported to Russia 300 million euros worth of timber products in 2001, up 33% on the year. The ministry also said Russia and Finland were in talks on the construction of $700-million, $600-million, and $500-million cellulose and paper plants in Russia and a number of other minor joint projects.
