M-real to cut 235 jobs in Sweden

Sep 06, 2005. /Lesprom Network/. Finnish paper company M-real Oyj will cut some 235 jobs at its paper mills in Husum and Wifsta, both in eastern Sweden, it was reported in end-August 2005. The workforce reduction will be carried out by the end of 2006. The move will affect 135 people in Husum, and 100 in the Wifsta mill. The Wifsta factory employs currently 270 people, while M-real staff in Husum stands at nearly 1,200.
M-real's regional director Peter Kinell expects that no lay-offs will be made. All employees in Wifsta will be offered severance payments, while all born before 1947 will be offered collectively agreed occupational pensions. The remaining part of the Wifsta workers will be provided a job in Husum, where up to 200 people might leave with occupational pensions.
M-real focuses on five core businesses, including consumer packaging, publishing, commercial printing, office papers, and the Map Merchant Group. The group has 26 production units in nine European countries and a worldwide sales network covering over 70 countries. M-real generated a turnover of Euro 5.5 billion in 2004. The company has 16,000 employees, of whom over 10,000 work outside Finland.
