Jul 23, 2009. /Lesprom Network/. The Nova Scotia Utility and Review Board has rejected the proposal by Nova Scotia Power Inc. to burn wood and biomass to create electricity at Newpage's mill in Point Tupper, as reported by ForestTalk.
The biomass burning proposal called for the burning of 11% of the annual provincial wood harvest to create electricity - enough electricity to power 50,000 homes.
The power corporation said it would cost about $1 billion over 25 years to buy this biomass energy.
The Utility and Review Board has decided that it doesn't have the authority to approve an operational expense for an amount that would affect power rates for more than two decades.
Nova Scotia Power must increase the amount of renewable energy it produces to meet targets imposed by the provincial government. If not, the corporation could face million-dollar fines.
