Nov 19, 2008. /Lesprom.com/. Thilmany Papers will take two weeks of market-related downtime this quarter. “We expect the downtime to be a temporary measure,” Russ Wanke, vice president and general manager, said in a statement. The scheduled two-week shutdowns will include four of six paper machines at Kaukauna, Wisconsin, USA, and the Nicolet mill in De Pere, Wisconsin. Thilmany employs 904 people between the two mills. The downtime period will begin Dec. 13 in De Pere, said Addie Boland, company spokeswoman. Downtime will be staggered on the machines in Kaukauna. “So we don’t feel comfortable giving all the little ins and outs of the dates,” she said. About 100 of Thilmany’s 695 employees will be directly affected by the measure, while 160 of the 209 at De Pere will be off for the two weeks. “We are committed to balancing production with market demand and these actions will allow us to do so during the balance of the fourth quarter,” Wanke said. “We will continue to closely monitor customer order patterns and adjust our plans accordingly.” Boland said the downtime is strictly to balance production with demand. “We will be starting up all machines after the first of the year,” she said. Thilmany, a business unit of Packaging Dynamics Corp., is a 125-year-old firm and leading producer of specialty papers. Products include bleached and unbleached lightweight papers for a wide variety of end uses.
