China’s emergence as a newsprint exporter is posing a threat to Canadian producers, according to Shipping Digest. “They have very modern, brand-new paper mills producing a good quality product at a very competitive cost,” said Kent Nickerson, order fulfillment and transportation manager for Bowater Mersey Paper Co. “That’s who we are competing with today in Brazil, India and other countries. So we at that level,” Mr. Nickerson told an industry conference in Halifax. Mr. Nickerson said India is quickly becoming the single largest destination for Canadian newsprint exporters, but Canadian companies have to be “at the top of our game” to compete with the Chinese in India, Brazil and other countries, he said. Bowater exports 90% of the 250 000 metric tonnes of newsprint it generates annually at its mill in Brooklyn, Nova Scotia, to more than 20 countries.
