Western Australian (WA) residents from the Kalamunda Shire have announced plans to protest against the logging of forests near their homes. Kalamunda shire president, Elizabeth Taylor, said that residents had not been made aware that a 640 hectare area of forest was due to be logged in late 2003. Hacketts Gully Residents Action Group said that residents were prepared to fight the planned logging, because the area was home to a vibrant community and a number of endangered species. The WA Forest Product's Commission (FPC) said that it had been forced to log near metropolitan areas to ensure that it could meet its obligations to provide sawlogs to timber millers.
