Jan 12, 2010. /Lesprom Network/. AbitibiBowater will restart paper machine No.5 at its Thunder Bay plant, in Ontario, Canada. The restart is set for the first week of February 2010, Mill Product News reported.
AbitibiBowater announced the indefinite shutdown of paper machines No. 4 and 5 in August. The shutdowns affected an estimated 360 employees.
The paper machines were originally shut down because of what the company called poor market conditions.
While the restart of the paper machine means that the Thunder Bay plant is in better shape than it was five months ago, the company is trying to find what it calls a more viable energy-cost structure. Company officials see that viable structure as vital to the future of some of its Ontario operations.
The AbitibiBowater mill presently employs about 300 people, which will grow to about 470 when the workers are recalled in February.
