Apr 28, 2005. /Lesprom Network/. Publicly listed timber processing company PT Barito Pacific Timber said it will cut production by 50% this year due to the growing scarcity of raw material. Company President Yuhannes Djalimin said Barito has 5 factories with a total production capacity of 2.5 million cubic meters of plywood and wood panel a year. Current conditions make it impossible for the company to operate at full capacity, Djalimin said. In a bid to preserve the country's tropical forests, the Indonesian government has imposed logging quota far below the total requirement of the country's existing timber processing factories. This policy, however, has forced many timber processing factories to stop operations. Barito has built plantation forests to reduce ist dependence on natural forests for logs, however their production is not yet sufficient to feeds te firm's plywood factories and pulp plants.
