Apr 06, 2011. /Lesprom Network/. SCA wants to form a common maintenance organisation for the Ortviken paper mill, the Tunadal sawmill and the Östrand pulp mill. This will lead to a reduction of the number of positions in the three mills by 58, as the company said in a press release received by Lesprom Network.
SCA has analysed different alternatives for maintenance organisation for the mills in the Sundsvall region. Among these alternatives were the trimming of existing mill organisations and the outsourcing of maintenance to an external company. On Monday April 4 the result of the studies was presented to the trade union representatives and SCA is now starting negotiations on the proposal to form a common organisation, SCA Maintenance, for the three mills.
“Our analysis shows that there is a substantial potential to increase efficiency and to reduce costs through coordination of maintenance work”, says Ulf Larsson, President of SCA Forest Products. “It’s the matter of utilising resources in a more flexible way between units, to establish a broader basis for procurement, to manage resources and ways of working and to achieve a smaller organisation in the number of positions. We have thoroughly analysed the issues involved and our conclusion is that the best proposal and the one with the largest potential, is to keep maintenance in our own organisation, but to do it in a unit that flexibly serves three mills.
In the proposed organisation there are 100 less positions than in the present maintenance organisations, but 42 of these positions are already included in the announced rationalisations at the Ortviken paper mill.
