Oct 04, 2007. /Lesprom Network/. Weyerhaeuser Company announced on October 3, 2007 it has been named to the Dow Jones Sustainability Index (DJSI) that tracks companies in terms of their economic, environmental and social performance.
Weyerhaeuser is the only North American forest products company in the industry category of basic materials to be named.
The annual review of the DJSI is based on a thorough assessment of corporate economic, environmental and social performance, covering issues such as corporate governance, risk management, labor practices, climate change, supply chain standards, labor practices and branding. The DJSI results are available to asset managers around the world for a variety of sustainability-driven investment portfolios.
The Indexes are credible indicators about how sustainability is being defined and practiced in the global marketplace. Earning a place on the DJSI signals to investors and other stakeholders a company's financial, environmental and social strength.
"Sustainability is a core value at Weyerhaeuser," said Steven R. Rogel, chairman, president, and chief executive officer. "In all we do, from renewing our forests, to reducing the environmental footprint of our manufacturing operations, to building homes, to recovering paper for recycling, Weyerhaeuser strives to act sustainably."
Launched in 1999, the Dow Jones Sustainability Indexes track the market performance of sustainability-driven companies worldwide. Selection of index components is based on an assessment of general and industry-specific criteria, and the analysis is externally audited. Weyerhaeuser was invited to take part in the DJSI review process by submitting an application and providing publicly available information.
"We're gratified to be a member of the Dow Jones Sustainability Index," Mr. Rogel said. "Third-party validation of our sustainability practices is important confirmation for our customers, employees, communities and shareholders that we are doing the right thing."
