Mar 04, 2005. /Lesprom Network/. Graphic and media trade union Amicus have reacted angrily to news that BPB Paperboard is to close the Davidson Mill in Bucksburn, Aberdeen with the loss of 276 jobs. Amicus say that the announcement of the closure last night makes a sham of the 90 day consultation period which the company are now required to conduct. Jimmy Robertson, Amicus' Scottish Branch Secretary, said: "We understand that a contract for a major part of the Davidson Mills work has already been signed so the decision to close had evidently been made well before the formal consultation period starts. "We have had our suspicions for some time about the company's future commitment to the site because of their continual failure to invest in new machinery and technology at the plant. This is a devastating loss of jobs in the local economy and a sad day for all those associated with the Mill that has been on the site for 200 years." Amicus will be meeting with plant officials on Thursday next week. Amicus say the Davidson Mill closure brings the total number to six paper mill closures in Scotland in the last four years.
