Jul 11, 2006. /Lesprom Network/. Employees at the Lanaken paper mill of South African paper producer Sappi Ltd in Belgium resumed work after the company's management promised to provide more information on its planned restructuring programme, trade unionist Jan Staal of ABVV said on July 10, 2006, according to De Standaard. The employees at the Belgian mill stopped work early on July 10, demanding more clarity on the future of the facility in line with the previously announced restructuring.
The move is part of Sappi's cost-saving programme in Europe and would see the cut of 123 jobs within a period of two years.
At present, as many as 700 employees work at the mill in Lanaken, in the Flanders region of Belgium.
Sappi Lanaken produces 480 000 tonnes of wood-pulp paper annually, which is mainly used in the printing of books, brochures, catalogues, leaflets and magazines.
