China plans to build an advanced forestry industry system with big scale, diversified products, sound distribution and high quality and efficiency, Asia Pulse reported citing Li Yulin, deputy director-general of the State Forestry Administration (SFA). According to a five-year development plan for 2006-2010, total output value of China's forestry industry will reach CNY 1 200 billion ($150 billion), forests coverage will reach 2 800 locations, output of commodity timber will reach 99 million cubic meters, man-made forests will exceed 70%, and comprehensive utilization of timber will reach more than 70%. The forestry industry will become an important part of the national economy, offering great potential, said Cao Qingyao, a spokesperson of SFA, on June 19. He said that the country's shortage of timber amounts to 100-150 million cubic meters, and the import of wood products and forestry products is expected to reach $14 billion in 2007. The forestry industry generated CNY 845.9 billion ($105.8 billion) of output value in 2005. Total import and export of major forest products topped $38.3 billion last year, and the trade surplus was $3.064 billion, the first trade surplus in China's forestry products trade. Wood furniture is still the biggest export among the forestry products, followed by wood products, laminated wood and laminated wood products.
