Mar 21, 2008. /Lesprom.com/. Coastal Lumber Company Edisto Division announced it is closing its Denmark facility by the end of March, with final shipping scheduled to be completed by the end of June, The Times and Democrat informed.
Company officials say the closure is a result of poor market conditions for the hardwood lumber industry over the past few years. The plant made hardwood and cypress lumber. The lumber mill is located on Voorhees Road, about a half-mile outside the city limits.
"The Denmark facility is one of our oldest sawmills, and we deeply appreciate the dedication and hard work exhibited by our Denmark employees," said Amyas Player, Coastal's chief operating officer.
The future of the Denmark facility, which sits on about 12 acres, is uncertain.
Coastal Lumber, a privately held company employs approximately 900 people in mills in the U.S. and abroad. None of the other mills, including the Walterboro site, are expected to close in the near future.
