Aug 29, 2007. /Lesprom Network/. In Shanghai, one of the largest paper markets in China, local papermakers can't keep up with consumers' rapidly growing demand for high quality papers, ChinaPaper Online reported. According to the Shanghai Paper Association, total consumption of paper and paperboard in Shanghai has grown to 2 million metric tonnes per year and per capita consumption is now 120 kgs. However, total paper output in Shanghai lags behind demand by over 1 million metric tonnes per year , with total output falling short at 950 000 metric tonnes per year, the Association said. Until more local capacity comes online, the unmet demand for high quality paper and various other grades will have to be satisfied by imports from overseas and other provinces, the Association added.
