Estonian wood-processing company Sylvester may have lost interest in the idea to build a production facility in Daugavpils region in south-eastern Latvia as the Estonians have not made any further inquiries since this June. Pjotrs Savostjanovs, who heads Daugavpils Council of Directors, comprising of top executives of businesses operating in Daugavpils, said that they had not heard from the Estonians since June when they announced the idea of a wood-processing company in this Latvian region. At the time Sylvester intended to explore the idea further by visiting Daugavpils in late July. "Apparently, the Estonian businessmen may have changed their plans," said Savostjanovs. Sylvester representatives planned to visit Daugavpils region and look for land they could buy to build a wood-processing plant on. The Estonians said the prospective site should have the area of 25 hectares and a railway and electric power sub-station nearby. Sylvester is Estonia's largest logging company posting a net profit of 76.7 million kroons last year on a turnover of 1.5 billion kroons. The group includes around 40 companies employing around 1,000 people. In Latvia, Sylvester already owns a saw million Launkalne, north-eastern Latvia. Sylvester group head Margus Kohava earlier told Estonian newspaper Eesti Paehvaleht that the concern did not plan to build any more new sawmills in Latvia, although the idea was being considered.
