Feb 12, 2009. /Lesprom Network/. Marathon Pulp is shutting down its pulp mill in Marathon, Ontario indefinitely. 220 employees will be out of work, the company said. Union official Herb Daniher says the decision by management is disappointing, given that workers agreed to cut their pay by 12.5% in November to help the company.
The mill had also been temporarily idled for two weeks before Christmas.
Marathon Pulp is jointly owned by Quebec companies Tembec and Kruger. At its peak, Marathon Pulp produced about 200 thousand tonnes of kraft pulp annually.
