Jul 10, 2009. /Lesprom Network/. There seems to be a strengthening tax revolt occurring in British Columbia, ForestTalk reports.
Last week Catalyst Paper paid only $6 million of the $23 million it has been levied by the municipalities of North Cowichan, Port Alberni, Campbell River, and Powell River.
TimberWest Forest Corp. has also challenged Campbell River’s $1 billion tax bill on its lands, refusing to pay the full amount. The portion in dispute is being held in trust until B.C. Supreme Court settles the issue.
And now Mercer International, owners of the Celgar pulp mill at Castlegar, failed to meet a July 2 deadline to pay $3.65 million charged by the City of Castlegar filing a petition in B.C. Supreme Court instead.
