Austrian Stallinger GmbH plans to invest between 80 million Swiss francs ($63.5 million) and 100 million francs ($79.4 million) in what will be Switzerland's biggest sawmill, a Swiss paper said. The facility will be constructed in Domat, in the Graubuenden canton. Stallinger, the cantonal and municipal authorities will sign a letter of intent in the following days.
The Austrian investor will receive a 8.0 million Swiss francs ($6.4 million) subsidy and will be granted a 10 million francs ($7.9 million) loan. It will be exempted from tax payments for up to ten years. The project is expected to create 150 jobs.
Eugen Arpagaus, a cantonal economy and tourism official, said the project could also yield synergies, as waste wood from the sawmill can be delivered to the nearby plant of chemicals company Ems-Chemie AG, which would use it to fuel its heating installation.
