Newsprint exports were up 21.0% (25,000 tonnes) in April compared to the year-earlier period, which helped to offset the 2.3% (17,000 tonnes) decline in domestic shipments. Total European demand for newsprint was down 4.4% (34,000 tonnes) last month, but the ytd level remained relatively flat at -0.2% (7,000 tonnes), CEPIPRINT said in a statement received by Lesprom Network.
The SC-Magazine paper sector recorded a 57.0% (21,000 tonnes) rise in exports in April year-on-year. Similar to the situation for newsprint, the hike in overseas shipments helped to stop total European deliveries of SC for the month falling further than 2.5% (9,000 tonnes) in April. European demand for the grade was down 9.4% (30,000 tonnes) compared to the same period last year.
Coated mechanical reels also benefitted from healthy export market conditions last month, showing an increase of some 25.1% (20,000 tonnes) in European shipments to outside Europe. The rise in exports coupled with a 10.7% (51,000 tonnes) boost to domestic shipments took total European shipments to 628,000 tonnes last month, up 12.8% (71,000 tonnes) on previous.
The uncoated mechanical paper sector reported a similar improvement year-on-year as exports of the grade rose 58% (13,000 tonnes) and domestic shipments climbed 6.4% (11,000 tonnes).
