Oct 22, 2008. /Lesprom.com/. The recent turmoil in the U.S. and world financial markets has resulted in a lower price of the Canadian dollar, compared to the U.S. greenback, LDNews reported.
The market turmoil has also caused lumber prices to plummet, eroding any gains that forest companies might bank on the drop of the Canadian loonie.
The benchmark random length spruce-pine-fir dropped to $197 per thousand board feet, down from $210 a week ago and $270 a month ago, according to Madison’s Canadian Lumber Reporter.
This compares to U.S. lumber prices of $400 during U.S. housing peak in 2004 and 2005. Doug Routledge, Council of Forest Industries northern vice-president, notes that the underlying market problems in the forest sector have not changed.
