Domtar Inc. plans to shut down the paper machine at its Woodland mill in Baileyville, Maine for six weeks due to unfavorable market conditions, PaperAge reported with reference to Bangor Daily News. The machine will be idled from April 16 until May 21, the company said. The machine downtime will affect about 100 of the mill's 500 workers, who were given the news last Friday. "It is a continuation of the market conditions," Domtar spokesman Scott Beal said. "The market hasn't rebounded like we had forecasted last fall and last winter, so we are still in this climate. So we are trying to match our production to the demands of our customers." The mill's pulp-making operation will not be affected. The Woodland mill operates one paper machine (PM 4) with a capacity of 125 000 tonnes per year of uncoated freesheet. The mill also has an annual cutsize production capacity of 44 000 tonnes and produces 385 000 tonnes per year of northern hardwood market pulp. Domtar is the third-largest producer of uncoated, free-sheet paper in North America. It is also a leading manufacturer of business papers, commercial printing and publication papers, and technical and specialty papers.
