Aug 25, 2010. /Lesprom Network/. Total European shipments of newsprint edged up 2.7% (24,000 tonnes) in July compared to the same period last year. The rise was the result of a 2% increase in domestic shipments partly to Germany, plus a 5.9% rise in exports of the grade to countries including Brazil. European demand for newsprint remained stable at 0.2% last month, CEPIPRINT said in a statement received by Lesprom Network. The SC-Magazine paper sector saw European demand contract 7.1% (24,000 tonnes) in July. However, shipments overseas of the grade climbed 31.2% (17,000 tonnes) largely thanks to an increase in North American demand last month. Exports of coated mechanical reels were also up in July, more than doubling year-on-year as demand increased in all export regions. Domestic deliveries were also up against the same period last year, showing a hike of 4.2% (21,000 tonnes). In the uncoated mechanical paper sector, domestic and offshore demand were both higher last month. European demand rose 6.2% (9,000 tonnes) led by rises to Germany and the UK, among other countries, while shipments outside Europe gained 12.9% (5,000 tonnes) on previous with moderate increases to Africa and the Far East. The Association of European Publication Paper Producers, CEPIPRINT asbl, is a legally and financially independent association based in Brussels, Belgium.
