Horizon Pulp & Paper inaugurated a new combined heat and power plant (CHP) located at the company's pulp and paper mill in Kehra, Estonia. The new CHP plant is part of the Horizon's Euro 25 million 'environment-centric' investment program, as the company said in the press release received by Lesprom Network.
“All electrical and thermal energy produced by CHP is used internally in Horizon mill to manufacture paper,” said Bashyam Krishnan, CEO of Horizon. “With the new CHP, above 80% of the energy used by the mill is now produced from renewable sources.
“Due to the CHP and other environmental investments, the mill's carbon footprint is reduced by 70% from the level in 2010,” Krishnan added.
The CHP's thermal output capacity is 25 MW and electricity output capacity is 4.4 MW.
Horizon Pulp & Paper, a subsidiary of Singapore-based Tolaram, is Estonia's only sack kraft paper producer. The company has the capacity to produce a total of 64,000 tonnes per year of 100% virgin unbleached kraft paper.
