Kasyanov says timber industry output may grow 5-8% per year
MOSCOW, June 18 /Prime-TASS/ -- Output growth in a number of sectors of Russia's timber industry may stand at between 5% and 8% per year, Russian Prime Minister Mikhail Kasyanov said at a government meeting Tuesday.
"All the prerequisites for achieving growth between 5% and 8% in certain sectors exist," Kasyanov said. The government is to discuss a long-term concept of the timber industry development at its meeting. Kasyanov said the concept is aimed at increasing efficiency in the timber industry. Russia has about a quarter of the world's forest resources, while Russia's timber industry accounts for only 3% of the world's timber market, Kasyanov said.
"We are considered an oil and gas country, but the country's forest resources are huge and this is a renewable natural resource," Kasyanov said. He said the government believed that private companies should be more actively involved in developing sustainable forestry in Russia, adding that the government lacked sufficient resources to renew forest reserves.
