Aug 15, 2005. /Lesprom Network/. Stora Enso's Oulu mill in Finland has received the first shipment of eucalyptus short-fibre pulp from Veracel pulp mill in Brazil. The 4 000 tonnes of pulp delivered will be used for test runs. Stora Enso's Oulu mill has an annual production capacity of 990 000 tonnes of coated fine paper. Veracel pulp mill, a joint venture between Stora Enso and Aracruz Celulose, started production of low-cost, high-quality eucalyptus pulp in May 2005, two months ahead of schedule. The annual capacity of the mill in full production is 900 000 tonnes, Stora Enso's share being 450 000 tonnes. Stora Enso's share of the expected production in 2005 is 180 000 tonnes. Pulp shipments to Stora Enso's mills in China and Europe commenced in July 2005. Veracel pulp mill is at Eunápolis in Bahia state in Brazil. When in full production, it will be the largest single-line pulp mill in the world. It will also be one of the most modern, with state-of-the-art technologies and processes meeting the strictest international environmental standards. Veracel is one of the largest private-sector investments in Brazil in recent years. The total investment, including plantations, the mill and infrastructure, is about $1.2 billion. Veracel has about 165 000 hectares of land, including approximately 71 000 hectares of eucalyptus plantations. The plantations are ISO 14001 certified and Veracel pulp mill was successfully audited in June 2005 for CERFLOR certification, a Brazilian forest certification system. Stora Enso is an integrated paper, packaging and forest products company producing publication and fine papers, packaging boards and wood products, areas in which the group is a global market leader.
