Suzano Papel e Celulose, one of the largest integrated producers of paper and pulp in Latin America, announced on 21 June its consolidated results for the second quarter of 2005. Second quarter net sales, at BRL 619.1 million ($262.7 million), were 3.4% higher than in second quarter 2004, on the positive effect of volume sold 2.9% higher, and the negative effect of average prices 6.0% lower, in reais - and 6.7% higher than in first quarter, reflecting an 8.4% quarter-on-quarter increase in volume sold, and a 1.5% fall in average prices. Recovery in volumes in the domestic market and growth of exports increased unit volume sold to 315,600 tonnes (up 8.4% from first quarter, and 2.9% from second quarter 2004. Appreciation of the real was a factor in the net income of BRL 258.5 million ($109.6 million) for the quarter and BRL 349.5 million ($148.3) for the half-year. Exports provided 48.9% of net sales in second quarter. This compares with 52.2% in first quarter and 49.4% in the same period of 2004. Pulp net sales, at BRL 156.3 million ($66.3 million) in second quarter, was 5.5% lower year-on-year reflecting average sale price 8.7% lower in reais, at BRL 1,326 in second quarter 2005, partially offset by a 3.5% increase in unit volume sold, to 117.9 thousand tonnes in the quarter - but was 5.6% higher than in first quarter, on unit volume sold 3.5% higher and average pulp price in reais 2.0% higher. Average pulp realization price in second quarter 2005 was $542/tonne, which compares with $497/tonne in first quarter and $501 in second quarter 2004. Paper net sales in second quarter was BRL 462.8 million ($196.4 million), 2.6% lower year-on-year. The positive effect of unit volume sold 2.5% higher, at 197.7 thousand tonnes, was partially offset by average paper prices, at BRL 2,341 ($993.4) per tonne, 5.0% lower in 2Q05 than in 2Q04. Domestic market paper sales volume was 2.6 % lower year-on-year, at 115.8 thousand tonnes - being 58.6% of total unit volume sales of paper, compared with 118.9 thousand tonnes, or 61.6% of the total sales of paper, in second quarter 2004 - but represented a substantial recovery, of 16.5%, from first quarter 2005, that mitigates the 2,1% lower average paper prices in the 2Q05. Suzano Papel e Celulose is one of the largest integrated producers of paper and eucalyptus pulp in Latin America, with pulp production capacity of 1.1 million tonnes/year and paper production capacity of 820 thousand tonnes/year. It offers a broad range of pulp and paper products to the Brazilian and international markets, and has leadership positions in key segments of the Brazilian markets.
