SFPA: Southern pine lumber exports increased by 16% in 2016

Southern Pine lumber exports finished 2016 at a record volume of just under 688 million board feet (MMbf), a jump of 16% above the 2015 export total, as the Southern Forest Products Association says in the press release received by Lesprom Network.

In the past five years, exports of Southern Pine lumber have more than doubled. During 2016, the top three destinations for Southern Pine exports remain unchanged: China (188.9 MMbf), up 46%; the Dominican Republic (102.7 MMbf), up 18%; and Mexico (92.1 MMbf), up 25%.

“Rising demand for Southern Pine lumber is undeniably linked to the industry’s efforts to introduce this species to buyers worldwide,” noted Jerry Hingle, SPC’s international consultant.

During all of 2016, softwood imports from Canada totaled approximately 16 billion board feet (Bbf), with 1.18 Bbf imported in December alone.
