Sweden’s stock volumes of roundwood and wood chips decreased by 4% in 4Q 2016

Sweden’s total stocks of coniferous sawlogs, pulpwood and wood chips are estimated to amount 8 million m³ (cubic metres solid volume excluding bark) at 31 December 2016. This is a decline by 4% compared with the same period of last year, Swedish Forest Agency reports.

Stock volumes of coniferous sawlogs are estimated to amount 2.75 million m³. Compared with same period of last year this is a decrease by 8%. The stock volumes of coniferous sawlogs declined in the whole country and mainly in the wood balance region 4 where stocks were 24% less.

The total stocks of pulpwood amounted to 4.4 million cubic metres. As per assortment pulpwood stocks was: 2.9 million m³ of mixed coniferous, 0.6 million m³ of spruce and 0.9 million m³ of broadleaved. Compared to the same time frame of the year before stock volumes of pulpwood decreased by 4%, but figures vary widely between wood balance regions and assortments.

In the wood balance regions 1 and 2 (Northern part of Sweden) the stock volumes of pulpwood were around 20% lower than at the end of 2015. In the wood balance region 4 (Southern part of Sweden), however, stock volumes of pulpwood were over 40% higher. This is due to the relatively large stock of mixed coniferous pulpwood. Stock volumes in the wood balance region 3 (West Central part of Sweden) remained at the same level as in the end of 2015.

The stock volumes of wood chips are estimated to amount 0.9 million m³, which is increase by 10% compared to in the end of 2015.
